Kibwezi East MP Vibrant on the Floor of the House

Kibwezi East Hon. @jessicambalu, MP has asked Energy and Petroleum CS to
provide details of the number of public primary and secondary schools and other public institutions in Kibwezi
East Constituency that are not connected to electricity and the steps being undertaken to ensure the said institutions are connected with electricity.

Hon. Mbalu further asked for the CS to outline measures that the Ministry has put in place to either service or replace dysfunctional and obsolete Solar PV
Systems that were installed to provide uninterrupted power supply to various public institutions in the country and
particularly in Kibwezi East Constituency, especially primary schools where power is critical for supporting the digital learning programme.

In his response Energy CS Mr.Davis Chirchir noted

” Rural Electrification & Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) has a total of 4,870 primary schools, installed with solar PV systems. The project has been in existence for 8 years now, thus most of the systems are due for maintenance.

Cumulatively, to date, a total of 1187 solar PVC systems have been maintained and another 156 are currently being maintained. REREC is carrying out continuous scoping of primary schools for maintenance subject to budget availability.”
