CS Mithika Linturi has held a fruitful engagement with MPs from the Sugar belt region on how best to reform and revive the ailing sugar industry.
The local sugar industry has the potential to generate revenues for both levels of government and for the cane farmers.
The CS listened to the suggestions and recommendations from the MPs, committing to review with a follow-up engagement in 2 weeks to align the Ministry’s action plan to the stakeholder views with the aim of accelerating productivity and efficiency in the sector.
He also informed the legislators that KALRO has developed a variety of sugarcane that matures in 12 months as opposed to the current variety that takes 18 months.
