The National Assembly’s Public Petitions Committee, in a session led by Hon. Ernest Kagesi (Vihiga), addressed three petitions committed to the Committee.

The first petition, presented by Hon. Ali Wario (Garsen), called for the review of boundaries for the Tana Delta irrigation project. Hon. Wario advocated for expanding the project’s boundaries to the east without displacing any residents.

“We don’t want Government projects to be drained, we want development”, said Hon. Wario.

The Committee advised collaboration between the petitioner and the community to establish clear boundaries, considering the Tana Delta’s Ramsar site and wetland area designation.

The second petition, brought forward by Hon. Florence Jematiah (Baringo County), sought the declaration of Mukutani as a public forest. Hon. Jematiah urged the committee to visit Baringo County and stressed the importance of public participation and community compensation before any designation.

The third petition addressed the resettlement of residents of Muthanga farm, presented by Hon. Mary Maua (Maragua). Hon. Maua highlighted the need for government support in settling over a thousand families residing on the farm and safeguarding them from eviction.

The Committee resolved to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The Committee assured that all petitions would be carefully evaluated, with opportunities for stakeholders to present their cases.
